Combat System

Echoes of Aincrad combat is built around weapon actions, resource management, and partner co-operation. This page explains what official sources confirm about the core combat loop — no combo chains, exact input windows, boss tactics, or optimal rotation guides are published here.

Core Weapon Actions

The official demo guide lists three primary weapon action types and two defensive options. Each consumes a resource — Stamina or SP:

Light Attack

Consumes Stamina or SP. Described as a foundational weapon action in the official guide.

Heavy Attack

Consumes Stamina or SP. Described as a higher-commitment weapon action alongside light attacks.

Special Attack

Consumes Stamina or SP. Each weapon type has its own special attack characteristics.

Parry

A defensive counter-action that consumes Stamina or SP. Timing and success conditions require hands-on play to confirm.

Evasion

A defensive movement option that consumes Stamina or SP. Timing, i-frames, and distance covered require hands-on play to confirm.

Stamina and SP

The official guide describes Stamina and SP as resources consumed by combat actions. Both are referenced as distinct resource pools in the official demo guide:

  • Stamina — consumed by attacks and evasion. Common in action games for dodge/dash mechanics.
  • SP — consumed by weapon special actions. SP is referenced as a resource consumed by combat actions; official sources do not publish a per-action cost table.

Official sources do not publish exact regeneration rates, maximum pool sizes, or the action-cost breakdown for individual weapon types. See the All Weapon Types page for the six official weapon types.

Partner and Switch System

Combat includes a partner system and a Switch system used to alternate actions and chain attacks with the partner. The official sources describe two modes:

Switch Mode

Draws enemy focus with the partner. The partner actively draws aggro, allowing you to attack from a different angle or manage threat.

See the Partner System page for the full confirmed description of partner mechanics.

Free Mode

Focuses enemies together. Both you and your partner engage the same targets simultaneously.

See the Partner System page for Combination Skills and Support Skills.

Partners have distinct fighting styles, Combination Skills, and Support Skills (which can include healing and offensive or defensive buffs). The Partner System page covers those confirmed details.

Weapon Progression in Combat

Defeating enemies with a weapon type earns Weapon Exp and unlocks Sword Skills for that type. Up to three Sword Skills can be equipped at a time.

In the demo, Weapon Proficiency is capped at level 3 per weapon type. See the Demo Missions page for the full official limits table and the All Weapon Types page for the six official weapon types.

Boss Encounters

The official guide says boss encounters are generally gated by a barrier and, once begun, continue until the player or boss is defeated. This mechanic is confirmed but specific boss names, health values, attack patterns, and phase transitions are not published in official sources.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the basic combat actions in Echoes of Aincrad?

The official demo guide lists light attack, heavy attack, and special attack as the three primary weapon actions, plus parry and evasion as defensive options. All consume Stamina or SP. The official source does not publish specific input commands, damage values, or timing windows for any of these actions.

What is the difference between Stamina and SP?

Both are resource pools consumed by combat actions. The official guide confirms they are distinct but does not enumerate their maximum sizes, regeneration rates, or which specific actions consume which resource. That detail requires hands-on play to confirm.

How does the Switch system work?

Switch Mode draws enemy focus with the partner. Free Mode focuses enemies together. Partners also have distinct fighting styles, Combination Skills, and Support Skills. See the Partner System page for the full confirmed description.

How do I unlock Sword Skills?

Defeating enemies with a weapon type earns Weapon Exp and unlocks Sword Skills for that type. Up to three Sword Skills can be equipped at a time. In the demo, Weapon Proficiency is capped at level 3 per weapon type. See the Weapons Guide for the confirmed mechanics.
